Carterville cheer team head to state competition

Carterville Varsity cheer team senior Zoe Zimbro hugs her father Shad Zimbro outside of Carterville High School Thursday morning before Zoe and the rest of the team depart for the 2020 IHSA Cheerleading And Dance Prelims in Bloomington, Illinois. The team will be competing at 12:05 p.m.tomorrow in the prelims, Friday Feb. 6, at Grossinger Motors Arena. The Lions must place in the top ten to qualify for the championship competition that takes place Saturday, Feb. 7. This is the fifth year-in-a-row the team has qualified for the competition and the ninth since 2006. “Competitive cheerleading is very athletic,” Head Coach Linda Drust said while riding with the team to Bloomington. “We train hard. We’ve had sprains, bloody noses, bruises and busted lips, but the most inspiring characteristic about this team is their desire and passion to push the limits to their absolute maximum. They have trusted Amy and me as their coaches and bought into our system to prepare and perform. They are outstanding athletes and amazing people.” Photo by Devin Miller
