High School recognizes cheer state title

The Varisty Cheer team was recognized for their state title after winning the IHSA State State Small Team Final Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 during an assembly inside the High School auditorium.

“We’ve only had 4 state championships in our school’s history,” Athletic Director and Assistant Principal of Carterville High School Brett Diel said.

Diel said the school needs to take time to recognize the team and show cheer does than bring school spirit to sport games.

“It takes a lot of strength and takes a tremendous amount of athleticism. There is no question in my mind that this group on this stage right here are the most athletic people in this building,” Diel said.

Head Coach Amy Drust said she was very honored for the school assembly celebrating the team.

“We appreciate the parents and the opportunities we’ve had this year,” Drust said.

Drust said as soon as they get done with the state competition they start planning for the next year. Drust credits her daughter, Coach Amy Drust, with working to develop the girls’ skill and planning choreography.
