Lady Lions fall to Commandos, rally to play Riverdale

The Lady Lions lost 54-63 to the Chicago Marshall Commandos and will play Riverdale High School for third place in the conference on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 5:30 p.m.

The Lions lost to the back-to-back state champs during the State 2A Semifinals at the Redbird Stadium in Normal, Illinois on Feb. 28, 2020.

This is the first time the girls basketball team has made it to the state competition. Last season the Lady Lions lost to Breese Central Community High School (55-45) in the 3A Sectional Semifinal.

Head Coach Matt Crain said the team rushed in the second quarter.

“We just didn’t make enough shots,” Crain said.

The Lady Lions have a record of 30-3 for the 2019-2020 season and the Commandos have a 22-10 record. Previously, Carterville defeated Nashville (54-42), Teutopolis (57-55) in the Super Sixteen.

Senior guard Abbey Crain said it was frustrating to get the ball and take the lead.

“We tried our best but it didn’t work out,” Crain said.

Last season the Commandos defeated Teutopolis (47-44) in the State Championship game. The team has won the championship two times in a row. The team has nine seniors on their roster.

“We still want to come off and win tomorrow,” senior guard Megan Barton said.

Coach Crain said he feels the team has made the community, the town and the region proud.

“I feel very proud of the way we came up and showed up to play the game,” Crain said.

Coach Crain said the team doesn’t like to lose and it will not be hard for the team to regroup for the game tomorrow.

“Whenever we do lose a game they don’t take it very well, they get a little chip on their shoulder. They’ll come out and give their best effort,” Crain said.
