Lady Lions devour Riverdale Rams in historic victory

“It’s a dream come true”

The Lady Lions won 68-31 against the Riverdale Rams for third place in the State 2A Finals at Redbird Stadium in Bloomington, Illinois.

Head Coach Matt Crain said he was “elated” to win the match.

“It’s a dream come true,” Coach Crain said.

Coach Crain said that the senior players on the team earned their 112 win of their high school career.

“It’s not been fun sometimes, but they’ve always came back,” Coach Crain said.

With 20 points, senior forward Jeniah Thompson scored the most points during the game.

Senior guard Megan Barton scored 17 points during the game.

Barton said that throughout the season the team has worked hard.

“I’m going to miss them so much, they’re basically my other family,” Barton said.

The Lady Lions started the game off strong with 19 points scored in the first quarter.

Senior point guard Abbey Crain launched into the game with a three-point shot and ended the game with one.

“That shot, I don’t know. It just kind of felt right to take it and end on a bang,” Crain said.

Crain said that the three seniors could not have taken this win without the rest of their team.

“It’s all team effort and that’s basically what is special about us. We did all of it together and we’re still a team and we’re always going to be a team,” Crain said.

Averi Vanderzille said though the season had tough moments, that the seniors helped the team through them.

“It’s been an incredible experience. This season has made me love basketball so much,” Vanderzille said.

Like the Lady Lions, this was Riverdales’ first state tournament appearance. The Rams are 28-4 for the season and lost to Pleasant Plains in their State Semifinal.

The Lady Lions lost to Marshall (54-63) last night during their State Semifinal. Marshall are the back-to-back state champions and will be playing against Pleasant Plains for the championship title.
