A line of cars Friday morning at Carterville High School may seem like a common sight. But children were not being dropped off to start their school day. The cars were waiting in line for a food drive.

500 packages containing produce and dairy were given out Friday at 9 a.m. outside of the Carterville High School.

The drive will take place every other Friday through July 31.

The food drive is a partnership between the City of Carterville, Gumdrops, the school district and Cusumano & Sons.

City Clerk and Community Center Coordinator Khrissy Hollister said the great response of the last drive caused them to increase the amount of packages given out.

“We have 250 that have produce, veggies and fruit. And 250 dairy that have yogurt, milk and butter,” Hollister said.

Hollister said this week, people could pick up two boxes if they have family or neighbors who are at work during the drive.

Founder of Gumdrops Amy Simpson says that the drive is her way of giving back.

“We’re just trying to help our community and help families through all this hardship that we are all experiencing,” Simpson said.
